Maharashtra approves ₹4,150-crore plan to transform Pandharpur's pilgrim infrastructure
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has greenlit a massive development plan for Pandharpur, costing Rs 4,150.46 crore. The project aims to modernise infrastructure while keeping the town’s spiritual essence intact. Officials have been given 30 months to complete the works, with a long-term vision spanning 50 years. Pandharpur, a key pilgrimage site, draws lakhs of Warkaris and devotees from all faiths each year. The new plan seeks to ease congestion, improve safety, and create a smoother experience for visitors.
The largest share of the budget, Rs 2,026.75 crore, will go towards land acquisition, rehabilitation, and compensation for affected properties. Another Rs 1,387.91 crore is set aside for upgrading the nagar pradakshina route, beautifying river ghats, and building parking, roads, and bridges.
A further Rs 735.80 crore will fund crowd management corridors, temple conservation, and livelihood programmes. The goal is to balance modern amenities with the town’s cultural and religious heritage.
Fadnavis has instructed officials to finish all projects within the deadline and avoid delays due to funding issues. The plan also includes integrated facilities to support the Warkari community and preserve Pandharpur’s sacred character.
Once completed, the upgrades will streamline pilgrim movement and enhance safety in Pandharpur. The investment covers infrastructure, heritage conservation, and economic opportunities for locals. The project is set to reshape the town as a well-organised spiritual hub for decades to come.
