Tourist Nearly Killed in Almaty Mountains After Ignoring Avalanche Warnings

Hikers survive avalanche near Almaty after defying official warnings

A tourist narrowly escaped death in the mountains near Almaty after disregarding warnings about high avalanche risk, reports our website, citing Kazakhstan's Ministry of Emergency Situations.

Two men, born in 1991 and 1989, set out on the Malaya Almatinskaya ("Little Almaty Loop") hiking route. Near Furmanov Peak, one of them was buried by a snow avalanche. Fortunately, due to the relatively small volume of snow, his companion managed to dig him out.

After receiving reports of the incident, emergency response teams from the Ministry of Emergency Situations were dispatched to the scene. They pinpointed the hikers' location via geolocation and safely guided them down the mountain.

Rescuers and medics examined both men before escorting them to the Kimasar Gorge, where their relatives were waiting.

Earlier, in the capital city of Astana, emergency crews had rescued a man attempting to jump from a bridge.
