GTA gas prices spike 20¢ per litre as Burlington's Polar Plunge raises funds
Gas prices in the Greater Toronto Area have jumped sharply in recent days. The surge follows a U.S.-led military operation in Iran, pushing fuel costs up by nearly 20 cents per litre. Meanwhile, Burlington's Special Olympics group is preparing for a chilly fundraising event on the Beachway this morning.
The conflict in Iran has triggered a noticeable rise in petrol prices across the GTA. Drivers now face an extra 19.8 cents per litre at the pump compared to last week. This increase is also set to impact the transport sector, where trucks handle 70% of goods movement in the region.
Over in Burlington, the local Special Olympics team is hosting its annual Polar Plunge today. Participants will take the icy dip at Beachway Park between 9 AM and 11 AM. The event received a last-minute boost when Alinea Land contributed $5,000 to support the cause.
Organisers had to secure a special permit to use the Beachway, which came as a surprise to the mayor's office. The requirement was only discovered when the Special Olympics submitted their application for the fundraiser.
The Polar Plunge will go ahead as planned, with extra funds from Alinea Land's donation. Higher fuel costs, however, are likely to affect both drivers and freight operators in the coming weeks. Trucking companies, responsible for most goods transport in the GTA, will face increased expenses as prices remain elevated.
