Pentagon Partners With Tech Giants to Embed AI in Military Networks

The Pentagon has struck deals with eight major tech firms to embed their artificial intelligence systems into classified military networks. The move marks a significant step in transforming the U.S. military into an AI-driven force, aiming to enhance decision-making for service members. The initial group of companies includes Amazon Web Services, Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, SpaceX, NVIDIA, and Reflection. Oracle was later added to the list. Some of these firms are already under contract, while others are finalising terms.

The approved AI models will operate at two security levels: one for secret data (Impact Level 6) and another for the most highly classified systems (Impact Level 7). The Pentagon did not disclose when the tools would be operational or whether the companies involved are receiving payment.

Notably absent from the list is Anthropic, whose AI had previously been used on classified networks. Pentagon Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael criticised a single unnamed partner for failing to meet expectations in collaboration.

This expansion follows Secretary Pete Hegseth’s push to integrate commercial AI into the Defense Department. The agreements are designed to accelerate the military’s shift toward AI-centric operations. The partnerships will allow the Pentagon to deploy advanced AI across secure networks, reinforcing its goal of faster and more informed military decisions. The absence of Anthropic and the unresolved financial terms suggest ongoing adjustments as the initiative progresses.
