Four-person band recollections feature Dani Filth, lead vocalist of Cradle of Filth, discussing his tour with Emperor in the '90s.
Cradle of Filth and Emperor's Humble Beginnings and Subsequent Success
Two iconic black metal bands, Cradle of Filth and Emperor, shared a stage in the UK in 1993. Despite the tour having very sparse attendance, it has since become a significant part of black metal history due to both bands' later successes.
During this tour, Cradle of Filth played to as few as four people in Edinburgh, with more people in the bands than in the audience. The Bradford gig saw a slightly larger crowd of around 60 people. Emperor was touring the UK for the first time during this run, a year before their breakthrough album.
Cradle of Filth, fronted by Dani Filth, released their debut album, The Principle Of Evil Made Flesh, in 1994, and went on to build a prominent career in extreme metal. On the other hand, Emperor's debut album, In The Nightside Eclipse, gained critical acclaim and international recognition soon after its release in 1994.
The modest and poorly attended beginnings of their 1993 UK tour stand in stark contrast with their later achievements and sizable influence within metal. Despite the low attendance figures, this tour is now regarded as a legendary but humble starting point for both influential black metal bands.
Fast forward to the present, Cradle of Filth is scheduled to tour South America next month, starting at the Mirrhage venue in Limeira, Brazil on August 21. The South American tour itinerary includes a total of 38 days, concluding in Ciudad De México on September 28.
Emperor, too, has continued to make waves in the black metal scene, building a strong legacy with seminal albums. Dani Filth, the frontman of Cradle of Filth, recently made headlines when he got engaged to his girlfriend Sofiya onstage during their set at Download in June.
