Fleeing Al-Fashir: Mothers and Children Find Hope in Golo Jadeeda

Thousands of families have fled Al-Fashir as fighting worsens, carrying only what they could hold. Many have arrived in Golo Jadeeda, where a UNICEF-supported health centre now provides lifesaving care. Mothers and children, exhausted from their journey, are receiving medical, nutritional, and emotional support. Awatif Mohamed escaped Al-Fashir with her nine children, balancing four blankets on her head during the long walk. Her husband has been missing for over a year, leaving her to raise the family alone. Now in Golo Jadeeda, she faces daily struggles to find food and keep her children safe.

Gisma Yagoub also fled the violence, her baby Mustafa severely malnourished when they arrived. Thanks to treatment at the health centre, his condition has improved. Health worker Nidal Elias currently manages 31 cases of severe acute malnutrition and has enrolled over 200 children in a feeding programme. Fadeela, a mother of five, volunteers at the centre, offering comfort to other women in need. Alongside her, Arafa Abdel Mawla brings her eight-month-old son Afrahim while helping new arrivals. Both women understand the hardships firsthand and provide essential support to families trying to rebuild their lives.

The Golo Jadeeda Health Center continues to assist displaced mothers and children with critical services. With UNICEF’s backing, it delivers medical care, nutrition, and psychosocial aid to those recovering from displacement. For now, the centre remains a vital lifeline for families with nowhere else to turn.
