Five Star Trading rebrands as Malaysia's Friendly Neighbourhood Cinema at 40
Five Star Trading (FST) has unveiled a fresh identity as part of its 40-year journey in Malaysian cinema. The company’s rebranding centres on community and diversity, aiming to transform how audiences experience films. One of its first major projects under the new brand will be distributing the Tamil action drama Karuppu in collaboration with Heartworks Pictures. The rebrand introduces FST’s new positioning as Your Friendly Neighbourhood Cinema. This shift reflects a focus on shared experiences and local connections while staying true to its founding values. The company also plans to expand its role in film production and distribution, targeting a stronger presence in the industry.
*Karuppu*, directed by RJ Balaji, is set for release on May 14, 2023. The film stars Suriya and Trisha Krishnan and is produced by Dream Warrior Pictures. FST’s partnership with Heartworks Pictures ensures its distribution across Malaysian cinemas. Beyond distribution, FST is growing its physical footprint. A new cinema in Muar, Johor, is scheduled to open by the third quarter of 2027. This project, developed with YKL Capital Sdn Bhd, marks another step in the company’s long-term expansion strategy.
The rebranding aligns with FST’s goal of bringing high-impact, diverse films to local audiences. With Karuppu as an early highlight, the company is set to strengthen its influence in production, distribution, and cinema operations. The new Muar location will further extend its reach in the coming years.
