Fans debate who should lead Red Dead Redemption 3—but Rockstar stays silent
A new wave of discussions about a potential Red Dead Redemption 3 has swept across the internet.
Reddit user KronusTempus proposed making Charles Smith—a character already familiar to players—the protagonist of the game. They cited several arguments: Charles is strong, idealistic, often spent time alone, and could continue the struggle of Native Americans in Canada. The post garnered nearly 2,000 upvotes, but fans remain divided.
Some supported the idea, while others urged the developers to move away from the Van der Linde gang entirely and depict the real Wild West without ties to the old characters. A number of players argue that RDR 3 isn't needed at all—the story is already complete, and a new prequel could ruin everything. In their view, a fresh game set in the same universe but with new protagonists would be the better choice.
As for Charles Smith, many spoke highly of him but questioned whether he's suited for a leading role. One user noted that his character is too well-developed, and playing as him with low honor would tarnish the impression of him, Gamebomb reports.
No official announcement for Red Dead Redemption 3 has been made yet. Rockstar Games is currently focused entirely on Grand Theft Auto VI, which is set to release on November 19, 2026.
