Ex-finance minister Kudrin launches Russia's new AI research venture

Alexei Kudrin, corporate development advisor at Yandex, has become a co-founder of the company AI Research Assistant, according to records from Russia's Unified State Register of Legal Entities (EGRUL). The company was registered on April 21, with Kudrin holding a 65% stake.

The remaining shares are divided between the Gaidar Institute for Economic Policy (15%) and the company ODC (20%). Ivan Begtin, who also owns 100% of ODC, has been appointed CEO of AI Research Assistant.

According to the register, the company's primary focus is data processing and information hosting services.

Speaking to Frank Media, Begtin said the firm will conduct R&D on applying AI assistants to analytical and research tasks. "I can't disclose the details yet—they're commercially sensitive—but the results of our work will be made public in some form," he added. In his Telegram channel, Kudrin stated that the company was established because Russia needs new AI tools for economic research. "Existing AI models aren't tailored to our needs," he wrote.

Kudrin served as Russia's finance minister from 2000 to 2011 and headed the Accounts Chamber of Russia from 2018 to 2022. In December 2022, he announced that he had accepted Yandex's offer to become a corporate development advisor, tasked with designing a holding structure to ensure the company's long-term, sustainable growth in its markets.
