Elderly driver's erratic behavior leads to licence revocation after highway chaos
An 87-year-old motorist from Ganderkesee put several road users at risk on Saturday along Federal Highway 212 in Berne. Police later stopped the man near Hammelwarder Straße in Brake after reports of erratic driving. Authorities have since revoked his licence due to concerns over his fitness to drive. The incident began around midday when the elderly driver was seen swerving towards Elsfleth at unusually low speeds. A witness noticed the dangerous behaviour and attempted to signal for the man to pull over, but he did not respond.
As the journey continued, the driver sideswiped the wing mirror of an oncoming vehicle in a 70 km/h zone. Despite the collision, he failed to stop. The witness kept following and eventually alerted the police. Officers intercepted the man shortly afterwards. A medical assessment revealed physical and cognitive impairments that rendered him unfit to operate a vehicle. The court immediately ordered the confiscation of his driving licence. Brake police are now searching for the second vehicle involved in the collision. Its driver has yet to come forward.
The elderly driver no longer holds a valid licence after the court’s intervention. Police have urged anyone with information about the unidentified vehicle to contact them on +49 4401 9350. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
