DHL Express launches AI tool to streamline global shipping declarations
DHL Express has introduced an AI-powered image recognition tool for international shipments. The new system lets customers photograph their items to generate an automated, customs-compliant description. This marks the first large-scale use of such technology in global express shipping. The tool aims to simplify the process of declaring package contents, which has traditionally been manual. Customers now only need a smartphone or camera to take a photo of their items before shipping. The system then analyses the image using computer vision and produces a structured description that meets international customs requirements.
No registration is needed to use the feature. It is currently available in eight countries: Germany, Canada, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, and the United Arab Emirates. DHL Express plans to expand the service globally in phases throughout 2026.
Enna Zarate, Senior Vice President of Digital Customer Solutions at DHL Express, highlighted the importance of accurate shipment descriptions for customer satisfaction. Dirk Olufs, Executive Vice President and Global Chief Information Officer, added that precise data from the start reduces follow-up queries and speeds up customs clearance. The new AI feature automates a previously time-consuming step in shipping. It is designed to improve efficiency for both customers and customs processing. The phased rollout will continue over the next two years.
