Construction halted at Karel-Gott Museum

In a surprising turn of events, the plans for a museum dedicated to the life and career of Karel Gott, known as "the golden voice of Prague," have been halted. Ivana Gottova, the pop star's widow, announced the decision due to health and personal reasons.

The museum project, known as Villa Gott, was originally planned and dreamed of by Ivana Gottova. It was intended to honour the legendary singer's life and career, which spanned over six decades and produced hits like "Biene Maja," "Lady Carneval," and "Around the World Once." Karel Gott, who sold an estimated 50 million records, lived in a villa in Prague-Smichov from 1974 until his death in 2019.

The villa, now under consideration for a square to be named after the pop star, was his long-time residence. After the halt of the Villa Gott project, the current plan in Prague to honour Karel Gott involves naming a public space near his former villa in Smíchov after him. The Prague 5 district council has endorsed a proposal to create a lasting memorial by naming a small square near the villa in his honour, rather than proceeding with a dedicated museum project.

The news is regrettable for fans of Karel Gott who were looking forward to the museum. However, the focus appears to be on commemorating him through the urban landscape in the area closely connected to his life. The status of the museum project for the future is currently unclear.

Ivana Gottova emphasized that every project should bring joy, and if it affects one's health, it's appropriate to call it quits. The decision was not an easy one for her, but she believes this new approach will provide a fitting tribute to the beloved pop star.

Meanwhile, the naming of a square after Karel Gott is currently being considered by the naming commission of the Czech capital. This move would further cement the singer's legacy in the city he called home for many years.

Despite the halt of the museum project, Karel Gott's memory lives on, not only through his music but also in the hearts of his fans and the city of Prague.
