Berlin - A new environmental and political advocacy group, dubbed "New Generation," will hold a "People's Parliament" this afternoon in a dome tent before the Bundestag, aiming to forge solutions for an overhauled environmental policy and increased democracy. The initiative, which will convene from June 2 to 7, will also stage a series of protests and actions, including acts of civil disobedience, centered around the Axel-Springer-Hochhaus.
The group intends the assembly in front of the Reichstag building to symbolize the "dawn of a new world," signifying trust, openness, and the will for change, rather than power or money. Criticizing traditional parliaments for being dominated by lobbyists and party interests, New Generation has curated a citizen council-like parliament by way of a lottery. Selected from an initial pool of 300 interested parties, 60 individuals, comprising 29 women, 28 men, and 3 non-binary participants, will deliberate in the People's Parliament, aiming to mirror the diversity of the German population.
Initially, participants hail mainly from the movement itself or its sympathizers. As a primary goal, the group aims for direct, person-to-person dialogue. The People's Parliament will conclude on Sunday, paving the way for scheduled protest actions starting on Monday.
While the specifics of these demonstrations remain undisclosed, an activist indicated that they aimed to protest in a manner that would not be easily overlooked. The optical appeal of the protests, according to the group, lies in their peaceful and always non-violent nature.
The New Generation movement emerged from a climate hunger strike in Berlin in 2022 and gained national attention following blockade actions in early 2024. Subsequently, the group announced a strategic shift and subsequent name change.
It must be noted that, in parallel to the New Generation movement's actions in Berlin, the city is hosting several significant events:
- Berlin Freedom Week 2025 - a cultural and activist response to rising authoritarian threats, aiming to transform Berlin into a symbol of resistance and remembrance through workshops, conferences, and cultural events focusing on democracy and freedom.
- Xplosion RITMO Berlin Festival 2025 - a music and arts festival featuring international artists and DJs.
- re:publica 2025 - a conference centered around the digital society, focusing on topics related to the internet and digitalization.
Though these events may share some thematic overlap with the New Generation movement, they are not explicitly related to the group's activity in Berlin.
- Amidst the Berlin Freedom Week, Xplosion RITMO Berlin Festival, and re:publica 2025, the New Generation movement is set to reinforce their political and environmental advocacy efforts, with the People's Parliament aiming to address overhauled environmental policies and increased democracy.
- As the People's Parliament concludes, New Generation will escalate their activism, launching a series of protests and actions, including acts of civil disobedience, reflecting their shift from climate activism to a more general focus on politics and general-news issues.
