Ingolstadt warns residents to avoid frozen lakes as ice risks rise
City of Ingolstadt Warns Against Venturing onto Frozen Lakes and Ponds
The city of Ingolstadt has announced that no ice surfaces on lakes or ponds within the municipal area have been officially approved for use. Authorities will not conduct any safety checks, meaning anyone stepping onto frozen bodies of water does so entirely at their own risk.
No Official Ice Safety Inspections
The city emphasizes that natural ice surfaces are neither monitored nor tested for stability. Ice thickness can be highly unpredictable—underground springs or inflows may weaken the ice from below, while snow can conceal dangerous thin spots. With milder temperatures forecast, officials warn that ice strength is expected to deteriorate rapidly in the coming days.
Hazards and Safety Warnings
Falling into icy water can trigger cold shock, hypothermia, and life-threatening emergencies, the statement continues. Even shallow waters pose significant risks. Cracking, creaking, or groaning sounds are clear warning signs that the ice may no longer be safe. The city urges parents and guardians to explicitly warn children about these dangers.
Emergency Guidelines
Attempting a rescue without proper training or equipment can be deadly, authorities caution. In an emergency, dial 112 immediately. Providing the most precise location possible—such as a What3Words address—can accelerate rescue efforts. To protect lives and health, the city advises avoiding natural ice entirely and instead using designated artificial ice rinks.
