Columbus Blue Jackets mourn the loss of legendary broadcaster 'Dapper' Davidge
Bill 'Dapper' Davidge, a beloved broadcaster for the Columbus Blue Jackets, has died at the age of 72. The team confirmed his passing on Tuesday and released a statement honouring his long career in hockey.
Davidge first joined the Blue Jackets organisation in 1997 as an amateur scout. Two years later, he transitioned into broadcasting, becoming the team’s colour commentator in 2000. He remained in that role until his retirement in 2014.
Before his time in Columbus, he played hockey at Ohio State University, where he captained the team in the 1976-77 season. He later moved into coaching, taking charge of Miami University of Ohio’s hockey programme in 1985. Known for his sharp suits and polished appearance, Davidge earned the nickname 'Dapper.' Fans also remembered him for his enthusiastic catchphrase: *‘Oh baby, you better believe it.’* He stayed connected to the team even after retiring, witnessing their first-ever playoff series win in 2019.
The Columbus Blue Jackets have lost a key figure from their early years. Davidge’s contributions as a scout, broadcaster, and mentor left a lasting mark on the franchise. His voice and presence will be missed by players, colleagues, and fans alike.
