Broken escalator at Thane station triggers morning rush chaos and near-stampede

A broken escalator at Thane railway station caused chaos during Tuesday’s morning rush. The malfunction occurred between platforms 5 and 6, forcing passengers to scramble for alternatives. Crowds quickly overwhelmed the station’s narrow foot overbridge (FOB), creating dangerous congestion. The escalator failed just as an express train arrived, flooding the area with hundreds of passengers—many burdened with heavy luggage. Some attempted to climb the stationary steps, while others squeezed onto the FOB, leading to a near stampede-like situation. With nearly five lakh commuters passing through Thane daily, the breakdown added to existing strains on the station’s infrastructure.

Railway authorities responded swiftly, starting repairs immediately. By around 1:00 PM, the escalator was back in service. However, the incident has renewed concerns about the station’s ability to handle surging passenger numbers, particularly as surrounding areas continue to grow rapidly. Platforms 5 and 6 are key hubs for suburban locals travelling between Mumbai and destinations like Kalyan, Karjat, and Kasara. The morning’s disruption underscored the urgent need for improved maintenance and expanded pedestrian facilities at one of the city’s busiest stations.

The escalator’s failure disrupted travel for thousands and exposed vulnerabilities in Thane’s infrastructure. While repairs were completed within hours, the incident has highlighted the pressure on ageing facilities struggling to keep pace with rising demand. Authorities now face calls to address both maintenance gaps and long-term capacity challenges.
