Tiny 4-inch Vinyl Singles Make a Big Splash in the Music World

In a surprising twist, the music industry has seen a new trend emerging with the introduction of Tiny Vinyl 4-inch singles. These miniature records, roughly 4 inches in diameter, are making waves in the market, offering a unique and collectable listening experience.

The concept of small vinyl records is not entirely new. Back in 1996, electronic music maestro Luke Vibert, under his Wagon Christ alter ego, released an 11" glow-in-the-dark vinyl single on Cologne's Electro Bunker label. However, Tiny Vinyl LLC, a startup based in Nashville, TN, has taken this idea to a whole new level.

These diminutive discs are limited in length, with only four minutes of music per side. To put this into perspective, a standard 7-inch single typically holds around 3-5 minutes of music, while LPs can span 15-30 minutes or more. The playing time of Tiny Vinyl singles is significantly reduced due to their small size and limited groove space.

The four-inch singles are designed to resemble 12-inch vinyl records in terms of their jackets and art. However, their size means they can only hold about 30 seconds of music per side, making them mainly novelty items rather than for extended listening.

Despite their size constraints, Tiny Vinyl singles are playable on a standard turntable, albeit with specialized players or adapters and tonearms/cartridges. The first batch of these miniature records is now available at Target, featuring releases by Black Sabbath, Ghost, Mötley Crüe, the Rolling Stones, and Third Eye Blind.

One of the first releases in this batch is Black Sabbath's 1970 classic Paranoid, adding a unique twist to the iconic album. Another notable release is a 9-inch version of Nine Inch Nails' 1989 single Sin.

Neil Kohler and Jesse Mann, the creators of Tiny Vinyl, aim to reward fans with an adorable, collectable, and playable miniature vinyl record. They believe these tiny discs offer a unique and fun way for music enthusiasts to expand their collections.

While the length and sound quality of Tiny Vinyl singles are significantly lower than standard vinyl records, they provide a novelty factor that appeals to many music lovers. However, classic tracks like the 4'33" single Die Young will never receive the Tiny Vinyl treatment due to their length.

The trend of novelty vinyl sizes seems to be growing, with Record Store Day releasing a range of 3-inch records, including singles by The Beatles and the Beastie Boys. The world of vinyl is certainly evolving, offering collectors and music enthusiasts a wide variety of unique and interesting options.
