A Symphony on Rails: Children's Railway Hosts Unforgettable Trombone Concert

A Vibrant Musical Experiment Takes Place on the Children's Railway in Mayakovsky Park

A carriage on the Children's Railway in Mayakovsky Park was temporarily transformed into a stage and creative workshop for a unique musical experiment. The trombone quartet of the Ural Youth Symphony Orchestra performed a program inspired by the film The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson for young listeners, who also had the chance to try their hand at playing professional instruments.

"For us, it's important that the Children's Railway is more than just an amusement ride—it should be a genuine educational platform that fosters well-rounded development in children," says Maxim Alalykin, head of the Sverdlovsk Children's Railway. "We are constantly exploring unconventional formats that captivate young audiences and broaden their horizons. The 'Workshop on Wheels' project is a perfect example of how to harmoniously blend a love for railways with high art. Instead of just riding the train, children become active participants in an exciting event, discovering new experiences and gaining unforgettable emotions."

The musical journey began at the central entrance to the Children's Railway pavilion. Passengers were greeted with a cheerful announcement in a playful, themed style that set a festive mood from the start. As soon as the train pulled away, the carriage filled with the rich, resonant sound of trombones.

The Ural Youth Symphony Orchestra's quartet delivered a dynamic program inspired by the legendary film The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. In the confined space of the carriage, the trombones took on a special depth and power—the music enveloped the listeners, blending with the rhythmic clatter of the wheels.

The interactive segment proved especially thrilling for the children. After the performance, Alexey Pukhno, the quartet's concertmaster, led a hands-on masterclass: the young participants explored how the instrument worked and, under his guidance, tried producing their first notes. One of the boldest was a boy named Elisey, who admitted he had never held such a serious instrument before and was surprised by how challenging—and exciting—it was.

"The Philharmonic is actively seeking new ways to engage young audiences and deliberately stepping beyond the walls of traditional concert halls," says Dmitry Kokorin, deputy director of the Sverdlovsk Philharmonic. "Projects like 'Workshop on Wheels' help break down barriers between musicians and young listeners. Children not only hear the sound of a trombone but get to hold the instrument themselves and try playing it—this is a whole new level of immersion in music. And we can see how these formats truly inspire and engage children."

This extraordinary flight vividly demonstrated that music can seamlessly weave itself into the most unexpected settings, becoming part of a living adventure.
