Berlin's Bellevue Palace Opens as a Bold Art Space for Two Weeks
Bellevue Palace, the 18th-century residence of Germany’s federal president, is set to become an art space this summer. From June 13 to 28, 2023, six leading artists will transform its halls and grounds with bold installations. Timed-entry tickets for the event are now on sale to the public.
The palace, originally built for a Prussian prince, has served as the president’s official home since 1994. For two weeks, it will host works by Monica Bonvicini, Jochen Gerz, Gregor Schneider, Rosa Barba, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Katharina Grosse. Each artist brings a distinct approach: Bonvicini questions architectural power, while Gerz’s projects push visitors to engage with memory and history. Schneider, known for his intense spatial interventions, will turn rooms into psychological landscapes.
Alongside the installations, an exhibition called the *Office of Public Matters* will encourage dialogue and reflection. Additional events include *Café Climate*, a discussion series, and a matinee featuring Belarusian activist Maria Kalesnikava. The project arrives as Berlin debates the future of cultural policy, adding another layer of public interest.
The art project will run daily from June 13 to 28. Visitors can explore the palace’s temporary transformation while engaging with the accompanying talks and exhibitions. The event marks a rare moment when a seat of political power becomes a space for artistic and civic exchange.
