Band Performance Chance for UCLA Bruin Marching Band: Collaborating with Muse on a Track for Their Upcoming Album
UCLA Bruin Marching Band Collaborates with Muse on "Pressure"
The UCLA Bruin Marching Band has made a memorable appearance on the super deluxe edition of Muse's latest album, "Simulation Theory." The band's brass and woodwind music, arranged by Gordon Henderson, director of the Bruin Marching Band, and percussion music, arranged by Kelly Flickinger, former assistant director, can be heard on the bonus track "Pressure."
The collaboration between the UCLA Bruin Marching Band and Muse is not a new phenomenon. In the past, the band has also contributed to Muse's sixth album. This time around, the band's involvement has been well-received by fans, adding a unique touch to the track.
The band members worked on the music for about a week before the session, but they were kept in the dark about who the recording was for until they arrived at the studio. Matthew Espinoza, a trombonist in the UCLA Bruin Marching Band, expressed his shock and excitement about the experience.
Muse, a Grammy award-winning English rock band, has sold over 20 million albums worldwide. The band consists of Matt Bellamy (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards), Chris Wolstenholme (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Dominic Howard (drums). The band's music has been featured in numerous movies, including "Silver Linings Playbook," "(500) Days of Summer," "That Thing You Do," "Legends of the Fall," "Fatal Instinct," "In the Line of Fire," and "Hello Dolly."
The recording of "Pressure" took place at UCLA's Evelyn and Mo Ostin Music Center at the Herb Alpert School of Music in June. The song can now be heard on Spotify and has already been broadcast on several platforms, including the National Football League, the Major League Baseball playoffs, and college football.
In addition to their work with Muse, the UCLA Bruin Marching Band has a rich history of appearances in TV shows and movies. Their appearances include "The 41st Annual Academy Awards" in 1969, "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" in 1989, "The Love Boat" in 1982, "Katy Tur's 'Battleground College Tour'," "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," "The Amazing Race," "Jeopardy!," and several others. Information about these appearances can be found on the band's website.
Matt Bellamy, the lead singer of Muse, felt that "Pressure" would sound great with a big marching band and reached out to Gordon Henderson to record the song with the UCLA Bruin Marching Band. Laila Sathe, a trumpet player in the band, believes that it's awesome that a band as popular as Muse wanted to record an alternate version of one of their tracks with a marching band.
The UCLA Bruin Marching Band's unique collaboration with Muse is a testament to their versatility and the band's ability to adapt to various musical genres. Their performances and costumes in related media were accurately represented, enhancing the overall aesthetic connected to the song.
