Harvard Unearths a Genuine 1300 Magna Carta Hidden in its Archives!

Harvard University's authentic Magna Carta copy unmasked - Authentic Magna Carta unearthed at Harvard University

Get ready for some treasure hunting without the dig, folks! A mind-bending discovery has been made at Harvard University - the renowned academic institution has in its archives a genuine Magna Carta from the year 1300! It's been mislabeled as a mere copy since it was bought post World War II.

The last original was shelled out an eye-popping $21.3 million in 2007 and graced the National Archives in Washington, as reported by the Washington Post.

Originally penned in 1215, the Magna Carta is the ancestor of modern-day constitutions. Establishing the groundbreaking principle that the ruler is not above the law, it was coerced from King John who governed England from 1199 to 1216 by the English barons. His successors, Henry III and Edward I, reissued it, with the most recent iteration rolled out in 1300.

The accidental find

Professor of medieval history, David Carpenter from King's College London stumbled upon this fascinating find. He came across a photograph of the "copy" while browsing Harvard's digital library for a research project and had his mind blown. "I froze and thought, 'Oh, my God!'" he confessed to the Washington Post. "That's an original."

He then enlisted the help of his colleague, Nicholas Vincent from the University of East Anglia, who was equally blown away by the document's authenticity. "The layout, the text, the handwriting, and the large 'E' for Edward," were all features that Vincent pointed out as hallmarks of originals. Vincent called the Magna Carta one of the most influential historical documents, as announced by Harvard University.

A connection to Trump?

Professor Carpenter also suggested a serendipitous connection between the discovery and the ongoing tussle between US President Donald Trump and Harvard. "He can't just take your land, he has to follow the laws too," Carpenter quoted, insinuating the relevance of a document that portrays a ruler being subject to the law in the current political atmosphere.
