Argao beaches on alert as tiny jellyfish swarm popular swimming spots
Beachgoers in Argao have been warned about small jellyfish appearing near popular swimming spots. The local disaster response office issued an advisory on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, after reports of clusters near Lawis Beach and Argao Pier. Authorities are urging extra caution, especially for children and those with sensitive skin.
The Argao Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) released the alert following photos of tiny jellyfish close to shore. These creatures, often translucent or dark-coloured, can be hard to see in the water. Their presence may increase after high tide, strong winds, or warmer sea conditions.
Swimmers are advised to scan the water carefully before entering and avoid areas where jellyfish are visible. Even small jellyfish can deliver painful stings, leading to skin irritation and discomfort. Children should be watched closely to prevent accidental contact. The MDRRMO stressed that jellyfish should never be touched, even if washed up on the beach. Their stingers remain active and can still cause harm.
To reduce the risk of stings, protective clothing like rash guards or wetsuits is recommended. The advisory aims to keep beach visitors safe while enjoying the water. Local authorities will continue monitoring the situation along Argao’s coastline.
