2025 Sets Grim Records as Natural Disasters Cause $166 Billion in Losses

Insurers covered 48% of the total damages, amounting to roughly $108 billion. The previous year, 40% of losses were insured, totaling $147 billion in payouts.

Los Angeles Wildfires Hit Hardest

The wildfires near Los Angeles in January were the costliest natural disaster of 2025, causing approximately $53 billion in damages and claiming the lives of 30 people.

Wildfires, floods, and severe thunderstorms together accounted for $166 billion in losses, making these three categories the largest contributors to the total damage.

Rising Death Toll

The number of fatalities from natural disasters rose globally last year to 17,200 people. In 2024, 11,000 lives were lost due to such events.
