YouTube stars ditch studios to launch bold independent projects

A growing number of content creators are bypassing traditional studios to build their own projects. These creators, already successful on YouTube, are now expanding their work with new series and formats. Their move highlights a shift toward independent production in digital media. Julian Shapiro-Barnum, known for Recess Therapy, has gained 1.3 million subscribers with his child-focused interviews. His latest project, Celebrity Substitute, invites famous figures to teach kids about their professions. Meanwhile, Cleo Abram—whose tech explainers have attracted over 8 million subscribers—will launch Outside Tonight, a live weekly late-night show debuting in June.

Other creators are following a similar path. Kareem Rahma’s SubwayTakes features unscripted interviews with both ordinary people and celebrities, keeping full creative control. Sean Evans, Brittany Broski, and Michelle Khare have also chosen independence over traditional studio deals. A recent panel discussion with these creators will be released on Monday.

YouTube remains the leading streaming platform in the U.S., accounting for more than 12% of total TV viewing. Its dominance has given creators the confidence to pursue their visions without studio interference. These creators see independence as a way to maintain authenticity and creative freedom. Their new projects, from late-night shows to celebrity-led education, reflect a broader trend in digital media. With YouTube’s continued growth, more may follow this path in the coming years.
