Young chess prodigies battle for glory in Komi's regional tournament
As part of the United Russia party's "Children's Sports" initiative, the Komi regional branch—with support from the Northern Olympia Olympic Reserve Sports School—hosted a regional chess tournament.
The event served as a qualifying stage for Sergei Karyakin's chess camps, which will be held this year at three venues: the Artek International Children's Center, the Orlyonok All-Russian Children's Center, and the Smena All-Russian Children's Center.
Young participants were greeted via video by Russian Senator Sergei Karyakin, a grandmaster, Honored Master of Sport, world rapid chess champion, and Olympic gold medalist. The legendary athlete offered words of encouragement, wishing the players bright victories ahead.
Yekaterina Dolgova, head of United Russia's Regional Executive Committee, emphasized the tournament's importance for the younger generation: "Chess is a game of wisdom that develops logic, patience, and foresight. Every child who played here is already a winner—they've gained invaluable experience and unforgettable emotions."
A total of 44 players aged 10 to 17 competed in the tournament. After fierce battles over the board, Anna Anisimova took first place, Matvey Pelmegov second, and Pyotr Morozov third. United Russia awarded them certificates and commemorative prizes. The regional winners will now advance to a federal selection round, vying for coveted spots in the camps.
All participants received letters of appreciation. The organizers also extended gratitude to Anton Kolegov, director of the Northern Olympia Olympic Reserve Sports School, as well as chess coaches and judges Nikolai Anisimov and Elvira Kamasheva for their role in making the event a success.
