YAKUTIA.INFO. The head of Yakutia, Aisen Nikolayev, has signed a decree introducing a special fire safety regime across the republic. The measure comes in response to a sharp rise in man-made fires since the start of the year, according to the press service of the head of the republic and its government.

Authorities report that 118 fires occurred in Yakutia in January 2026—19.2% higher than the same period last year. The blazes claimed 14 lives, including nine children, while four others were injured. Just this week, a fire in Neryungri District killed five people, among them minors.

"Since the beginning of this year, we have observed an alarming increase in man-made fires in residential areas, tragically accompanied by a rise in fatalities, including child deaths," said Aisen Nikolayev. "An analysis of the circumstances shows that in nearly every case, homes lacked automatic smoke detectors, which could have alerted residents in time to prevent these tragedies."

In addition, the regional leader ordered stricter oversight of fire safety compliance and a comprehensive inspection of residential buildings, institutions, and enterprises across Yakutia, involving state inspectors and local authorities.

Particular attention will be given to districts with the highest fire risk: Abyysky, Verkhnevilyuysky, Verkhoyansky, Gorny, Kobyaysky, Mirninsky, Namsky, Neryungri, Oymyakonsky, Olekminsky, Suntarsky, Tattinsky, Ust-Aldansky, Khangalassky, Eveno-Bytantaysky, and the city of Yakutsk.

The special fire safety regime will remain in effect until the end of February. During this period, authorities will conduct Operation Housing, inspecting electrical equipment service life, wiring conditions, heating systems, and other risk factors.
