White House unveils new drug affordability plan ahead of midterms

Healthcare costs have become a major issue for voters ahead of the November midterm elections. With many Americans struggling under financial pressure, the White House is set to announce new measures to improve drug affordability at an event later today. The move follows growing concerns over rising expenses and recent cuts to Medicaid support. The administration plans to expand its existing TrumpRx programme, a government website listing over 40 medications. The platform does not sell drugs directly but guides users to drugmakers’ websites or offers pharmacy discount coupons. Officials have negotiated deals with major pharmaceutical companies to match or undercut prices found in other developed nations.

Some Democrats remain unconvinced. Critics argue that many drugs featured on TrumpRx are already low-cost or have cheaper generic versions available. Their scepticism comes as Americans face additional financial strain from the end of enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies and recent Medicaid reductions. The expanded TrumpRx offerings aim to ease pressure on household budgets before the midterms. The programme’s success will depend on whether the listed medications provide meaningful savings for patients. For now, the administration is pushing the initiative as a direct response to voter concerns over healthcare affordability.
