Vladivostok's Bold Great Gatsby Reimagines Fitzgerald with Surreal Twists

Performances of The Great Gatsby: Farewell (18+)—a stage adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, dramatized by Yelena Isayeva—will take place on April 30, May 1, and May 2 at the Primorsky Regional Academic Drama Theater named after Maxim Gorky. The production is directed by Honored Artist of Russia and Golden Mask Award winner Yefim Zvenyatsky, the theater's press service announced.

The Great Gatsby (18+) is a cautionary tale about the era of consumerism, disguised as a grand love story. Its protagonist, Gatsby, is a self-made man who embodies the "American Dream," convinced that wealth can buy anything—even the love of a woman who has been married for five years. But the past cannot be relived...

Gatsby is a man of legend, shrouded in wild rumors—some call him a killer, others a bootlegger or a German spy. Every Saturday, his mansion becomes the epicenter of high society, drawing crowds of guests, none of whom truly know their host.

Published in 1925, just four years before the Great Depression, the novel proved prophetic. Fitzgerald seemed to foresee a future where even the most sincere hopes are shattered by indifference and cruelty. Beneath the champagne bubbles and the rhythm of parties lies the loneliness of the human soul.
