US explores nuclear-powered ships with small modular reactors for cleaner maritime future

The US Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration has launched a new initiative to explore small modular reactors (SMRs) for commercial shipping. A Request for Information (RFI) has been issued to assess how this technology could transform maritime operations and strengthen national energy security. The RFI aims to gather insights on the practicality, scalability, and commercial potential of SMRs in shipping. It specifically seeks solutions for high-power, reliable energy that could allow vessels to travel longer distances at greater speeds—while eliminating traditional fuel expenses.

The Maritime Administration is working alongside key agencies, including the US Coast Guard, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and the Department of Energy, to support SMR development. Their goal is to integrate reactor production into US shipyards and establish clear frameworks for liability, insurance, and port inspections. Officials have emphasised the need for government backing to reduce market uncertainty. Stephen Carmel, from the Maritime Administration, stated that adopting SMRs requires a 'system-transition lens' to ensure smooth implementation. US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy added that the initiative will provide a cutting-edge energy source, lowering costs and enhancing national security. Public comments on the RFI can be submitted until 5 August.

The Maritime Administration’s push for SMRs targets multiple objectives: revitalising US shipbuilding, cutting operational expenses, and securing long-term energy independence. If successful, the technology could reshape commercial shipping by offering a cleaner, more efficient power alternative to conventional fuels.
