Ukrainian Filmmakers Shine with Webby and Cannes Wins in 2026
Ukrainian filmmakers are gaining international recognition, with recent wins at two major awards. A virtual reality documentary, Shelter, has earned a 2026 Webby Award, while Zhanna Ozirna’s debut feature, Honeymoon, triumphed at the Cannes Film Festival. Both successes highlight the growing influence of Ukrainian talent in global cinema.
The VR documentary Shelter took home the Webby Award in the Apps, Software, and Immersive-Science and Education category. Co-produced by Ukraine, the Netherlands, and Belgium, the 360-degree film was directed by Ivanna Khitsinska and Sjoerd Swierstra. The jury, led by Chinese filmmaker Chen Kaige, commended its 'remarkable cinematic strength' and 'emotional intensity'. Alongside the honour, the team received a €40,000 grant to fund future projects by Zhanna Ozirna.
At the 79th Cannes Film Festival, Ozirna herself won the Build Your Dream Award for Best Debut Feature. Her film, *Honeymoon*, is a romantic thriller about a young couple trapped in their apartment during a conflict in a small town near Kyiv. The award further solidifies her place among emerging directors. Beyond filmmaking, Ukrainian artists are also shaping international productions. Maryna Mazepa, from Konotop in the Sumy region, contributed to the horror film *The Mummy* by designing the physical movement language of its central character. Her work adds to the growing list of Ukrainian creatives making an impact abroad.
The Webby and Cannes wins bring fresh attention to Ukrainian storytelling. Shelter and Honeymoon showcase the country’s ability to produce compelling, award-winning work across formats. With financial support and industry recognition, these filmmakers are set to expand their creative reach even further.
