Broadway's Death Becomes Her Closes After 650 Performances Without Profit

The Broadway production of Death Becomes Her, a musical adaptation of the 1992 film, will close after 650 performances. The show’s final curtain falls on June 28, 2025, following a seven-month run at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. Despite earning critical acclaim, the production failed to recover its $31.5 million investment. Death Becomes Her opened in November 2024, starring Megan Hilty and Jennifer Simard in roles originally played by Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn. The production received 10 Tony Award nominations, ultimately winning for best costume design.

The musical’s closure adds to a challenging trend on Broadway. Since the pandemic, only five musicals have managed to recoup their costs. Universal Theatrical Group’s senior VP of creative and strategy, Lowe Cunningham, acknowledged the difficulties but expressed pride in the show’s run. A North American tour is already planned, set to begin in September 2025 at Playhouse Square in Cleveland, Ohio. Cunningham highlighted enthusiasm for the production’s future beyond Broadway.

The Broadway run of Death Becomes Her will end without recouping its $31.5 million budget. However, the musical’s tour suggests continued interest in the show. Its final performance at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre remains scheduled for June 28, 2025.
