Three districts are under alert status in yellow.
Forecast Alert: Yellow Weather Warning Issued Across Portugal
Portugal's weather authority, the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), has issued a yellow alert for the districts of Setúbal, Évora, Beja, and Lisbon from specific dates next week due to the expected rise in temperatures.
In a statement released on Monday, the IPMA announced that the yellow alert is valid for Setúbal, Évora, and Beja from 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, 26th May, to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, 27th May. In Lisbon, the alert will take effect from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, 29th May, due to the anticipated heatwave.
The IPMA attributes the heatwave to the "persistence of high maximum temperatures," a gradual rise in temperature that has already begun across the mainland Portugal, as the authority warned on the weekend. More significantly, the risk of forest fires, possibly reaching maximum classification in some southern municipalities, is also on the rise.
According to the IPMA, thermometers will record temperatures exceeding 30°C across most of the territory from Tuesday, with some coastal areas in the western region exempt from this heat wave. Temperatures are expected to surpass 35°C in the South and Tejo Valley during the same period. However, minimum temperatures will also increase across the nation, albeit remaining below 10°C in some northern and central regions until Monday, gradually rising thereafter to above 15°C in most areas.
The hot and dry weather is due to a hot air mass originating from North Africa, the IPMA maintains, predicting clear or cloudless skies in most conditions, with some cloud cover possible at night and early morning in the northern and central regions. The wind will continue to blow from the north, weak to moderate, with occasional strong gusts on the west coast and highlands, especially in the afternoon.
The ultraviolet radiation index will remain at "very high" levels throughout the period, as is typical near the summer solstice and due to the lack of cloud cover. With the increased heat and persistent dry weather, beachgoers are advised to exercise extra caution.
Given the specific and detailed nature of weather forecasting, it is advisable to consult the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) or European EUMETSAT weather monitoring agencies for the most accurate and reliable data regarding the upcoming heatwave in Portugal. These organizations typically publish regional temperature predictions and color-coded alerts for heat, helping individuals stay informed about weather conditions in their localities.

Environmental scientists are alerted to the anticipated heatwave in Portugal, as the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) emphasizes the significant rise in temperatures related to the heatwave in their yellow alert. This environmental-science concern is further accentuated by the risk of forest fires, particularly in some southern municipalities, due to the hot and dry weather.
