"The legendary band Earth, Wind & Fire admit that they had merely a day to properly rehearse for their guest appearance at Lollapalooza alongside Sabrina Carpenter"
Earth Wind & Fire Surprise Lollapalooza Performance with Sabrina Carpenter
In an unexpected turn of events, legendary band Earth Wind & Fire made a surprise appearance during Sabrina Carpenter's Lollapalooza set in Chicago on August 3, 2020. The collaboration was arranged at the last minute, with the band having only 24 hours to prepare.
According to Philip Bailey, frontman of Earth Wind & Fire, he was only familiar with Sabrina Carpenter's song Espresso prior to the show. The idea for the cameo reportedly came from Carpenter's agent.
The logistical details behind organizing this last-minute collaboration remain undisclosed, but it's known that Earth Wind & Fire was already on a summer tour at the time, which might have made the coordination feasible. A private plane was sent for the band and their entourage to travel to Chicago.
The rehearsal was quick and somewhat sketchy, but everything was dialed in by the evening of the performance. Despite the lack of time for a thorough run-through, the collaboration proved to be a success.
Sabrina Carpenter wrote on Instagram that Earth, Wind & Fire "raised me on the greatest songs of all time," and Bailey found her to be "very cordial, very kind, and very approachable." The energy between the two acts was compatible and complementary, with Carpenter's performance acceleration and build being fantastic.
Earth Wind & Fire "floated on all that energy" during their performance, playing classics like "Let’s Groove" and "September." The placement of their segment in Carpenter's performance was perfect, adding an extra layer of excitement to her set.
Philip Bailey revealed this information in an interview with Vulture, shedding some light on this spontaneous and memorable collaboration. Despite the lack of detailed public information about the behind-the-scenes organization, the surprise was publicly acclaimed for its spontaneity.
