Ted Turner, CNN founder and media pioneer, dies at 87 after dementia battle

Media tycoon Ted Turner, the founder of CNN, has died at the age of 87. He passed away peacefully on Wednesday, surrounded by his family, after a long struggle with Lewy body dementia. His bold personality and groundbreaking work in broadcasting left a lasting mark on global media. Turner launched CNN in 1980, creating the world’s first 24-hour cable news network. The move revolutionised how people consumed news, setting a new standard for real-time reporting. Beyond media, he made headlines in sports by winning the America’s Cup in 1977, bringing the prestigious yachting trophy back to the U.S.

Known for his blunt and often controversial remarks, Turner earned nicknames like *The Mouth From The South* and *Captain Outrageous*. His outspoken nature matched his ambitious ventures, including ownership of the Atlanta Hawks for 19 years and the Atlanta Braves for 20 years. In 2018, he revealed his diagnosis of Lewy body dementia, a condition he battled privately in later years. Despite his media empire, Turner took greatest pride in his environmental work. He devoted hundreds of thousands of acres to conservation, particularly to protect the American bison. His marriage to actor and activist Jane Fonda from 1991 to 2001 also kept him in the public eye.

Turner’s death marks the end of an era for a man who reshaped news and sports. His legacy will endure through CNN’s global influence and the vast wild landscapes he preserved. The media pioneer’s impact stretches far beyond television, leaving behind a complex but undeniable imprint on modern culture.
