Sudden arrival of winter-like conditions sweeps across nation as summer approaches
Turkey Experiences Unexpected Cold Wave as Summer Approaches
Istanbul and several other regions in Turkey have been hit by an unforeseen cold wave, with heavy rainfall and storms sweeping across the country. While the weather was expected to improve after a series of warm days, the sudden change has dashed hopes for a sunny start to summer.
Meteorologists predict that the rain will intensify nationwide from May 29 to 31, with a particularly high risk of flooding in the Mediterranean, Aegean, Central Anatolia, and Black Sea regions. In response, the Turkish State Meteorological Service has issued a "yellow" alert, warning of potential weather dangers such as thunderstorms, heavy rain, and short-term storms in 38 of the country's 81 provinces.
Istanbul, one of the affected cities, is bracing for continued rain and cloudy conditions throughout the rest of May. Forecasters anticipate that heavy showers and thunderstorms could occur, along with cooler-than-usual temperatures for late spring/early summer. The potential for localized flooding and travel delays is high, and residents should not expect much sunshine as unsettled conditions persist.
Residents of other parts of Turkey, such as the northwest and Black Sea regions, may also experience heavy fog, strong winds, and slippery roads, compounding the effects of the cold wave. While Istanbul is unlikely to see snow, this weather pattern is highly unusual for this time of year.
The cold wave has already caused disruptions in various parts of the country. In Istanbul, overnight downpours on May 26 led to traffic congestion during rush hour, and in Bursa, a strong downpour and lodos winds on May 25 forced residents to contend with a tree falling onto a parked car due to strong gusts.
In Tekirdağ, heavy fog and rain caused low visibility and slippery roads on the highway, making it difficult for drivers to navigate. Though the cold wave is unexpected, it is essential for residents to stay informed about the latest weather updates and be prepared for potential disruptions.
Environmental scientists are investigating the potential links between the current climate-change patterns and the unprecedented cold wave hitting Turkey, as this weather anomaly occurs during the approach of summer. Meanwhile, the sudden shift in weather from warm days to cold waves and heavy rainfall could have significant impacts on the local ecosystem, particularly for agricultural regions heavily dependent on weather conditions for crop production.
