"Storm on Glass Windows": A significant weather disturbance pounding the northern regions of Kazakhstan (visual footage)
Hailstorm for real in northern Kazakhstan! Check out the video, hailstones as big as quail eggs hitting Petropavlovsk today.
A jaw-dropping video from Instagram account skopetro shows enormous hailstones, reminiscent of quail eggs, raining down over Petropavlovsk. Here's a peek at the raw power of Mother Nature.
Community members shared their firsthand experiences and reported on the storm's widespread impact.
"Let me tell you, man, those hailstones battered against the windows so hard, it was spine-chilling! Thankfully, it didn't last long", "Hail city – there was heavy hail", "Dusty village – there was hail", "Mega-mall area – just rain, no hail", users reported.
Cast your mind back to last summer, when a hailstorm left several planes sporting ugly dents at Astana airport.
Interestingly, monster hail also struck the neighborhood surrounding the village of Kasym Kaiynenov in the East Kazakhstan region. Buildings got pummeled, cars were wrecked, and crops were decimated.
July saw severe weather sweeping through Almaty, inundating pedestrian crossings, and pelting hail across multiple sections of the city.
Coping with a hailstorm in Kazakhstan:
Here are EMERCOM RK's recommendations to keep you safe during a hailstorm:
- If possible, stay indoors and keep as far away from windows as practical. Avoid using electrical appliances while hailstorms typically accompany thunderstorms.
- If you find yourself outdoors, attempt to find shelter. Protect your melon (head) from hailstones with hands, a bag, clothing, or any available coverings.
- Hailstorms can be risky under trees, so stay clear of them to minimize the chances of both lightning and hailstone fragments causing injury.
- If inside a car, halt your journey. Distance yourself from windows, turn your back toward them if possible, and protect your peepers (eyes) with your hands or clothing. If it's safe, lying down on the floor is best.
- If there are small kiddos present, shield them, safeguarding their eyes with your clothing or hands, and covering their fragile bodies with your own.
- No matter what, stay put in your vehicle during a hailstorm, as they usually last for 6 minutes or less, rarely surpassing 15 minutes.

Additional Advice:
When preparing for a hailstorm, stay ahead of the storm by monitoring local weather forecasts and heeding warnings from Kazakhstan's meteorological service. To minimize potential property damage, bring outdoor items inside, cover vehicles with car covers, thick blankets, or park in a covered area if available. For added protection, consider boarding up windows in hail-prone areas with plywood or thick plastic.
During the hailstorm, remain indoors, seek shelter, avoid windows, keep your furry friends safe, and secure any exposed valuables.
Post-hailstorm, inspect your home and property for damage and document any incidental evidence for insurance purposes. If extensive damage occurred, consult professionals for a comprehensive assessment and repairs. Stay safe, stay safe, stay safe!
