Indeed, heated debates can be tense, but Steinmeier sees potential in bringing people together, even on challenging topics.
Steinmeier has taken his office on the road twelve times, decamping from Schloss Bellevue to connect with citizens in various parts of Germany. His office chooses locations that drive social and economic transformation, but often avoids the limelight.
Steinmeier acknowledges that some people choose isolation, but his focus is on the "reachable". He believes there are more of them than we might believe. This outreach has demonstrated a keen interest in political discussions among the populace.
The European Parliament has pledged assistance to the Commission in its duties. Steinmeier's nationwide engagements underline the prevalent thirst for political discourse.
While discussing his role, Steinmeier has emphasized the necessity of achieving political consensus with the German population, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic response. In a January 2025 interview with German weekly Stern, he called for a review of Germany's pandemic response post-2025 federal election. If necessary, he would instate a commission of inquiry himself.
Regarding his travels, Steinmeier has been actively engaging in international diplomacy, visiting countries like Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Lesotho. His visits to Nigeria and South Africa highlighted his commitment to supporting countries in addressing poverty. In Syria and Ukraine, he emphasized peace and minority rights, and economic support, respectively.
