St. Rochus Choir Celebrates 100 Years with Bach's St. John Passion on Good Friday
When the first notes of the St. John Passion resound through St. Rochus Church on Good Friday, it will be far more than just a traditional sacred concert for the town of Zirndorf. The local choir is marking its centennial on April 3, 2026, and to celebrate, it is treating itself—and its audience—to one of Johann Sebastian Bach's most monumental works. Daniela A. Müller, the deanery's director of music, has assembled an impressive ensemble for the occasion.
Composed during Bach's time in Leipzig, the St. John Passion is now regarded as a masterpiece of vocal music, captivating listeners anew with its dramatic power. The instrumental foundation in Zirndorf will be provided by the Ensemble KlangLust, while a stellar lineup of vocal soloists will take the stage. Aljoscha Lennert will perform the pivotal role of the Evangelist, with Andrea Zeilinger, Barbara Buffy, Yiwen Chen, and Tim Goldmann handling the soprano, alto, tenor, and bass parts, respectively.
Yet the true stars of this afternoon will be the members of the St. Rochus Choir. A century of choral tradition will resonate as they raise their voices in the moving chorales and powerful choral passages. Under Müller's direction, preparations are in full swing to meet the work's exacting demands and properly inaugurate the choir's anniversary year.
