FC St. Pauli Installs Largest Rainbow Solar Panel System at Millerntor Stadium
For the second consecutive Bundesliga season, matches at FC St. Pauli's home ground, the Millerntor, will be accompanied by a splash of color and a trailblazing sustainable energy project. The Kiez club will install a 316 kW rainbow-colored solar plant on the north stand during the summer break, making it the largest solar installation of its kind globally.
Set to be operational for the first home game in late August, this solar project will feature 1,080 solar modules spread across 1,800 square meters. These panels, laminated using Morphocolor technology, incorporate vibrant colors while maintaining minimal power loss. The rainbowoptics are achieved through the strategic arrangement of the solar modules, a worldwide technical novelty, as per the club's statement.
The solar power plant is expected to generate approximately 285,000 kWh of electricity annually, equivalent to the energy consumption of around 80 multi-family households. It will significantly contribute to the Millerntor Stadium's energy needs, which currently total nearly 2 million kWh per year. The installation will also save approximately 140 tons of CO2 annually, marking a substantial step towards reducing the stadium's carbon footprint and promoting renewable energy.
The energy company LichtBlick, based in Hamburg, will be responsible for the project's financing, installation, and operation. FC St. Pauli's commercial director, Wilken Engelbracht, expressed gratitude for the trustworthy cooperation between the club and LichtBlick. He highlighted the importance of partners supporting the club's attitudes and ideas decisively. LichtBlick CEO Marc Wallraff emphasized the innovative nature of such projects, stating that they demonstrate that sustainable solutions can both inspire and reach people.
FC St. Pauli Pride representative Tanja stressed the significance of this initiative, particularly at a time when the queer community faces efforts to be marginalized. She celebrated the combination of diversity and renewable energy, noting that it was a strong statement on various levels. Visibility is crucial, Tanja remarked, given the current climate.
