Sporting accuses Porto of locker room sabotage in explosive handball feud
Sporting Clube de Portugal has branded FC Porto's recent actions as "absolutely reprehensible" and will urgently request a meeting with Portugal's Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sport, according to a statement released by the leões (Lions).
The Lisbon club's demand comes a day after alleged incidents involving FC Porto during a handball match at Dragão Arena on Saturday. Sporting has accused the dragões (Dragons) of "underhanded tactics," noting that several of its members required medical attention following the game.
"The latest episode in this unacceptable series of events has crossed every conceivable line: a locker room filled with an intense, toxic odor that affected the physical condition of our handball players and staff. This is not just deplorable—it is criminal," the statement reads.
FC Porto, which went on to lose the national handball match, denied the allegations on Saturday, calling them "serious and unfounded." The club also stated that it had contacted the Public Security Police to inspect conditions at Dragão Arena.
In today's statement, Sporting condemned FC Porto's pattern of "disrespect" and "manipulation," asserting that "it is essential for Portugal's sports regulators to take a firm, uncompromising stance and punish these unworthy behaviors with the utmost severity. Such conduct has long surpassed what is tolerable in a rule-of-law state."
The club further emphasized that "all institutions responsible for overseeing sports must uphold sporting integrity. It is unacceptable for repeated actions of this nature—consistently perpetrated by the same parties—to tarnish and undermine the reputation of Portuguese sports on the international stage."
Sporting argued that these incidents are "neither isolated nor accidental," citing recent controversies involving FC Porto. These include a video shown to referee Fábio Veríssimo in the locker room in an alleged "clear attempt at influence," as well as ball boys hiding match balls and the theft of towels during a Primeira Liga clash at Dragão.
"If there was ever any naive illusion that such underhanded practices had been eradicated, reality has brutally and unequivocally shattered it," the statement continues. "What we are witnessing today is not merely a repetition—it is a calculated escalation. More vile, more underhanded, and even more indefensible than the darkest episodes that have ever stained Portuguese sports."
