Spirit Airlines' potential shutdown sends shockwaves through budget travel

Spirit Airlines could shut down soon, leaving passengers and the wider airline industry facing major changes. The budget carrier’s collapse may push up ticket prices even further, with experts predicting a 23% increase on some routes. Rival airlines are now preparing to step in, but travellers with existing bookings could still face refund issues. If Spirit stops flying, customers holding tickets for future flights will be entitled to full refunds. However, those who paid with cash or used airline loyalty points may struggle to recover their money or transfer rewards. The uncertainty has left many passengers concerned about their travel plans.

Major carriers like United Airlines and American Airlines are already making plans to assist Spirit’s customers and employees. American has introduced fare caps on Main Cabin tickets for routes where it directly competes with Spirit. This move aims to prevent sudden price surges while keeping travel options open.

The loss of Spirit’s low-cost flights could also create opportunities for other budget airlines. Competitors such as Frontier, Avelo, Breeze, and Allegiant may try to fill the gap by expanding into markets Spirit once served. But until new services are established, reduced capacity and rising demand could drive fares higher.

Fuel costs have already pushed ticket prices up in recent months. With Spirit’s exit, the industry may see even sharper increases. Analysts estimate that average fares could rise by around $60 for a round-trip flight, adding to the financial strain on travellers. The collapse of Spirit Airlines would reshape the market, forcing passengers to pay more for fewer options. While some travellers will receive refunds, others may lose out depending on how they booked. Meanwhile, rival airlines are adjusting their strategies to handle the fallout and prevent even steeper price hikes.
