Soaring airfares and hidden fees make summer travel costlier than ever
Travellers are facing higher costs this year as airlines and banks adjust their policies. Airfares have risen sharply, with April 2023 prices up 21% compared to the same month last year. At the same time, checked baggage fees for domestic and short-haul international flights have also increased. Airlines have made several changes that affect how passengers pay for flights and extras. Many now charge more for checked bags, though customers in higher loyalty tiers or with co-branded credit cards can still check a bag for free. The cost of redeeming miles for flights has also gone up, as airlines require more points for free tickets.
Summer flights remain the most expensive due to high demand. Meanwhile, banks are pushing travel rewards cards with large sign-up bonuses—but these deals only pay off if users avoid carrying a balance. High interest rates quickly wipe out any rewards earned.
Joining an airline’s frequent flyer programme remains the easiest way to collect miles. Financial institutions also offer credit cards that reward purchases with points, though the value drops if users don’t pay their balance in full each month. The combination of rising airfares, increased baggage fees, and stricter rewards programmes means travellers must plan carefully. Those who pay off credit card balances and take advantage of loyalty perks will still find ways to save. But for others, the cost of flying continues to climb.
