Russia's New Gas Pipeline to China Nears 2027 Launch After Key Approvals

Russia is moving forward with plans to supply natural gas to China via a new pipeline. The Far Eastern route, set to launch in late January 2027, will carry up to 10 billion cubic metres of gas annually for at least 25 years. Officials from both countries have already approved key steps for the project’s development.

Preparations for the pipeline’s launch have been underway for some time. In 2024, Russia’s state expert review agency, Glavgosexpertiza, gave a positive assessment for the Far Eastern route. The project follows a bilateral intergovernmental agreement covering cross-border infrastructure.

The pipeline’s cross-border section will run beneath the Ussuri River, connecting Dalnerechensk in Russia with Hulin in China. Recently, installation of equipment began at the Dalnerechensk gas metering station, a critical step for future deliveries. Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller confirmed that work remains on schedule. Once operational, the pipeline will secure long-term gas exports to China, reinforcing energy ties between the two nations.

The Far Eastern route is expected to start gas flows in late January 2027. It will transport 10 billion cubic metres of natural gas each year under a 25-year agreement. The project marks another step in expanding Russia’s energy exports to China.
