Russian blogger's Brest videos spark debate over facts and local pride
Russian travel blogger Igor Zhivichkin recently posted two Instagram videos about his late-April trip to Brest. The clips sparked mixed reactions from locals, with some welcoming his visit and others pointing out factual errors.
His first video featured a walk along Sovietskaya Street, showcasing the city’s architecture and lively atmosphere. But not all details were accurate—leading to corrections from Brest residents in the comments.
In the opening video, Zhivichkin explored Sovietskaya Street, praising its vibrant setting and historic buildings. However, he made a few noticeable mistakes. One was misidentifying the city’s iconic 'golden man' statue as the lamplighter who lights the streetlamps each evening. Locals quickly clarified that the figure represents a different historical figure.
He also mispronounced Lenin Street as 'Livanevskogo', an error that did not go unnoticed. Despite these slip-ups, some commenters appreciated his effort and welcomed him warmly. A few even commended him for correctly referring to the country as *Belarus* rather than the outdated term 'Belorussia'. The second video took viewers to the Brest Fortress, a key landmark. Yet the inaccuracies in his earlier clip had already sparked debate. Some Belarusians urged him to stop filming in the city, while others engaged in discussions about local housing. A Russian commenter’s claim that Brest offered 'meagre' accommodation options triggered arguments with residents defending their city’s living standards.
Zhivichkin’s videos brought attention to Brest, but the response was divided. While some viewers enjoyed his tour, others focused on correcting his mistakes. The exchange also highlighted differing views on the city’s housing and lifestyle between locals and outsiders.
