PGA Championship returns to Aronimink with 33 special invitations and star absences

The PGA Championship returns to Aronimink Golf Club this year for the first time since 1972. The tournament has extended special invitations to 33 players, including some notable names outside the usual qualification criteria. Defending champion Scottie Scheffler will compete again, but two high-profile players—Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson—will miss the event. Scottie Scheffler enters the championship as the title holder, aiming to defend his crown. Meanwhile, the field has expanded beyond the top 70 in PGA points, allowing additional players to secure spots.

Dustin Johnson, despite not meeting standard eligibility, received one of the 33 special invitations. Another invitee, Kota Kaneko, joins from the Japan Golf Tour, adding international representation. Ian Holt, a two-time winner on the Korn Ferry Tour, also earned his place in the competition. Canada’s Sudarshan Yellamaraju has been named the first alternate, ready to step in if a spot opens. However, two major absences will be felt: Tiger Woods will not participate, and Phil Mickelson withdrew due to a family health matter.

The PGA Championship at Aronimink will feature a mix of returning stars and fresh faces. With 33 special invitations issued, the field includes players from different tours and backgrounds. The absence of Woods and Mickelson, though notable, leaves room for others to make their mark in the tournament.
