Aurora Alert: Baden-Württemberg Might Light Up This Week
Get ready to witness a breathtaking sight! There's a high chance of catching the Northern Lights in Baden-Württemberg at the beginning of the week. Carolin Liefke from the House of Astronomy in Heidelberg suggested kept an eye out, hinting at the rare spectacle potentially happening soon. If you were lucky, Bavaria residents got a glimpse of these colorful dancing lights in the sky on Sunday evening. Despite the clouds in Baden-Württemberg, the German Weather Service (DWD) promises clearer nights ahead.
To catch these lights, point your gaze north. With some luck, you might even see the elusive red tint. The reddish hue usually appears at higher altitudes, which is quite rare but typical for southern Germany. Greenish auroras, though, are commonly seen at lower altitudes, as noted by the expert.
The current high chance is due to heightened solar activity, triggered by solar flares leading to a coronal mass ejection directed towards Earth. This solar breeze carries electrons, protons, and atomic nuclei that influence Earth's magnetic field, creating a phenomenon known as magnetic short circuits. These short circuits excite the air particles, making them shine brightly as auroras.
DWD forecasts that clear skies might return sometime on Monday and Tuesday evenings. Paying attention to the weather is crucial for the best viewing chances. The cloud cover is forecasted to clear in the south-west at sunset, with relatively clear skies south of the Alb, Upper Swabia, and along the Danube, according to DWD reports.
So keep your eyes peeled and fingers crossed for Monday and Tuesday nights! You never know, the Northern Lights might make a magical appearance in Baden-Württemberg.

Additional Information
To fully enjoy the Northern Lights, choose a dark sky area away from city lights and with minimal cloud coverage. Keep an eye on aurora activity forecasts, as these can vary depending on solar wind and geomagnetic conditions. Several websites like the University of Alaska Fairbanks' Aurora Forecast or the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) offer real-time forecasts to help you plan your aurora viewing. Additionally, make sure to check reliable weather apps or websites like Weather.com, AccuWeather, or the German Meteorological Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst, DWD), as clear skies enhance your chances of sighting the auroras.
