Northern Germany braces for thunderstorms and flash flooding this week
Unsettled weather is set to hit parts of northern Germany over the next two days. Thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds will bring disruption from Sunday night into Tuesday. Residents in the Hanover area should prepare for rapidly changing conditions.
The first signs of trouble will appear on Sunday night. Patchy fog could reduce visibility to under 150 meters in places. Temperatures will hover between 17°C and 24°C during the day, but overnight lows will fall to between 10°C and 14°C.
By Monday, isolated severe thunderstorms may develop. These could bring hail, gusts of up to 80 km/h, and sudden downpours of 20 to 30 litres per square meter within an hour. Some areas might also see prolonged rain, with totals reaching 50 litres over three hours. Tuesday will remain stormy. Showers and thundery rain will persist, though daytime highs could still climb to 24°C in Hanover. The risk of further heavy rain and strong winds will continue throughout the day.
The forecast warns of hazardous conditions, including reduced visibility, flash flooding, and damaging winds. Those travelling or working outdoors should stay alert for sudden weather changes. Local authorities may issue further warnings if storms intensify.
