Amex Gold Card's 2024 refresh raises rewards—and the annual fee

The American Express Gold Card has changed significantly over the years. Once a basic charge card, it now offers generous rewards and a higher annual fee. Recent updates in 2024 introduced new perks and adjusted costs for cardholders. In 2017, the card was known as the Premier Rewards Gold Card with a $195 annual fee. Since then, it has transformed into a points-focused option with expanded benefits.

The latest refresh in 2024 increased the annual fee to $325. New credits were added, including up to $100 for Resy and up to $84 for Dunkin’. Existing perks like $120 in dining credit, $120 in Uber Cash, and access to The Hotel Collection remained. By April 30, 2026, the card will offer 5X points on prepaid hotel bookings through AmexTravel.com or the app. It will also provide 2X points on prepaid car rentals via the same platforms. Cardholders can still earn 3X points on flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel. The card continues to reward 4X points at U.S. supermarkets, capped at $25,000 in yearly spending. It also gives 4X points at restaurants worldwide, with a $50,000 annual purchase limit.

The Amex Gold Card now combines higher rewards with a steeper annual fee. Cardholders gain access to multiple credits and bonus points across travel, dining, and shopping. These changes reflect its shift from a simple charge card to a premium rewards option.
