Nine Inch Nails hold their first performance with reinstated drummer Josh Freese
Nine Inch Nails' Peel It Back Tour Continues Across North America
After a successful run in Europe and the UK, Nine Inch Nails' Peel It Back tour has resumed in North America. The tour, which features Josh Freese as the new drummer, kicked off last week at the Oakland Arena on August 6.
Josh Freese, who was previously with the Foo Fighters, joined Nine Inch Nails in 2013. Following Freese's departure from the Foo Fighters in May 2023, Ilan Rubin, who had been playing with Nine Inch Nails, took over as the drummer for the Foo Fighters.
The Peel It Back tour will continue in Seattle on August 12 and will end at the Inglewood Kia Forum on September 19. The tour will also visit other cities such as Chicago, Portland, Vancouver, West Valley City, and Denver.
During the Oakland shows, Nine Inch Nails performed both heavier hits on the main stage and acoustic versions/remixes at a smaller second stage. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross began the shows on the second stage with acoustic performances of Right Where It Belongs, Somewhat Damaged, Ruiner, and Piggy.
The band's setlist typically includes a mix of classics like "Head Like a Hole," "I'm Afraid of Americans," "The Frail," "The Wretched," and the emotionally powerful closing "Hurt." The live performance has been praised for its political timeliness and stark minimalist beauty, with Trent Reznor delivering "majestic" and "quietly devastating" renditions of key tracks.
Recent setlists from shows such as the August 12 concert at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle show the band performs both acoustic B-stage versions and full band main stage sets, sometimes including special interludes and collaborations with guests like Boys Noize.
Upcoming tour dates (as of August 2025) include:
- August 19 & 20: United Center, Chicago, IL, with Boys Noize as special guests
- Other venues include Moda Center in Portland, Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Maverik Center in West Valley City, and Ball Arena in Denver
Tickets went on sale in January 2025 with exclusive online merch also offered. For ticket details for the North American leg of the Peel It Back tour, visit the NIN Peel It Back tour website.
In summary, Josh Freese is the new drummer for the Peel It Back Tour, which combines classic Nine Inch Nails songs with new arrangements, and the band continues to tour North America through at least late August 2025.
