Region: Spring Kicks Off Hiking Season—And the UNESCO Global Geopark Harz – Braunschweig Land – Eastphalia Has the Perfect Offer

New Harz Geopark Hiking Challenge Celebrates Earth's Natural Wonders

On April 22, Earth Day, the UNESCO Global Geopark Harz – Braunschweig Land – Eastphalia (HBLO) launched its third hiking challenge, inviting families, nature lovers, and outdoor enthusiasts to explore the region on foot while discovering its most remarkable sites. Under the motto "How far will you go—together for Mother Earth?" the initiative encourages participants to experience the geopark's natural and geological treasures while collecting special stamps along the way.

Aligned with the global observance of Earth Day, the challenge serves as a reminder of nature's invaluable role—and the urgent need to protect it. According to the geopark's press release, the event offers a unique journey of discovery, where hikers not only enjoy scenic trails but also learn about the Harz region's geological and landscape heritage by gathering stamps at selected locations.

Three Stamps, Three Extraordinary Destinations

This year's challenge ties into the geopark's annual theme: "The Power of the Spring—Water, Knowledge, Responsibility." Participants can collect three special stamps from designated stamp boxes along the Harzer Wandernadel network (note: these are separate from the standard stamps).

One of the stops is the Steinerne Renne (HWN 28), a striking granite gorge with waterfalls and rapids. Starting from Steinerne Renne station (Hasserode), the route passes a hydroelectric plant before winding through the rugged landscape—partly along unpaved paths—toward the Steinerne Renne inn. The stamp box is located on the western bank of the Holtemme River. Important: The bridge near the inn is currently closed. Hikers should continue along the trail to the next forest road, turn right, then take another right at Hanneckenbruch forest lodge onto Bielstein Chaussee, which leads directly to the destination. The one-way route covers roughly four kilometers, though alternatives include a direct path via Bielstein Chaussee or a circular loop from the station.

Another highlight is the Naturmythenpfad (Nature Myths Trail) at Silberteich near Braunlage (HWN 148), a four-kilometer circular route through Harz National Park. Along the way, interactive stations, ancient forests, and dramatic rock formations frame the scenic Silberteich pond, where water takes center stage in local legends.

The third destination blends history and geology: the Stahlquelle (Steel Spring) near Neudorf in the Lower Harz (HWN 193), an iron-rich spring discovered in 1926 that reflects the region's mining heritage. Adventurous hikers can explore the 15-kilometer Neudorf Mining Circuit, while those seeking a shorter trek can opt for the Menschentappe trail, starting from the parking lot between Dankerode and Neudorf.

Hike, Discover—and Win

The challenge runs from April 22 to October 31. Participants can log their special stamps in the official challenge flyer (downloadable at harzregion.de/home under "News"), a Harzer Wandernadel stamp booklet, or even a simple sheet of paper.

Those who collect all three stamps will not only experience breathtaking landscapes but also enter a prize draw. Local businesses have once again donated attractive rewards, with full details—including terms, additional information, and prize descriptions—available at *www.harzregion.de*.
